Julio Moretzsohn is Professor of Choral Conducting and Chamber Music at the Universidade do Rio de Janeiro, where he is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Music, in the field of Musical Language Structuring. Moretzsohn graduated in Music Education in the same university and specialized in Choral Conducting with Professor Carlos Alberto Figueiredo in the Pro-Arte Music Seminars. He also attended international Choral Conducting courses with Professors Cees Rottewell (Holland, 1985 and 1988), John Poole (England, 1986), Martin Schmidt (Germany, 1987) and Erick Erickson (Sweden, 1990).

Since 1993, Moretzsohn directs the vocal group Calíope, composed by professional voices and period instruments. Calíope has been intensively active in the musical scene of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil, accompanied by different instrumental configurations: harpsichord and violoncello, harp, organ or chamber orchestra. In these 14 years, the group presented programs fully dedicated to important composers such as Claudio Monteverdi, Henry Purcell, Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann, Gioachino Rossini, Anton Bruckner and Benjamin Britten as well as thematic programs, with pieces related to Brazilian Colonial Music, Latin-American Colonial Music, Iberian Villancicos, Baroque Operas, North-American Music, Negro Spirituals, Brazilian Choir Music – from Colonial to Contemporary –, and Belle Epoque: Rio-Paris 1900. Calíope also took part in two operas: Claudio Monteverdi’s Orfeo, performed at and produced by Sala Cecília Meireles (Rio de Janeiro), and John Blow’s Venus and Adonis, performed at and produced by Centro Cultural do Banco do Brasil (Rio de Janeiro).
In 2003 Moretzsohn formed Coro Sinfônico do Rio de Janeiro, composed of 100 lyrical singers, to perform with the Orquestra Petrobras Sinfônica and the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira. Under renowned conductors, this choir has been presenting varied symphonic repertoires in Brazil. Among the most significant pieces are Mahler’s Symphonies no. 2 and 8 (Symphony of a Thousand); Mozart’s Requiem, Coronation Mass and Great Mass in C Minor; Shostakovich’s Symphony no. 13 (Babi Yar); Bruckner’s Te Deum; Beethoven’s Symphony no. 9, Choral Fantasy and Missa Solemnis; Villa-Lobos’ Forest of the Amazon, Choros 10 and Brazilian Suite no. 4; Haendel’s Messias; and John Adams’ On the Transmigration of Souls.
Since 1999, Moretzsohn directs the project Orquestra de Vozes Meninos do Rio (children of Rio voice orchestra), sponsored by Education and Culture Municipal Departments, through which he has put together a choir formed by one thousand children from municipal public schools.
