Calíope’s Resumé
Winner of the 2002 Carlos Gomes Award in the Choirs and Vocal Groups category, in 2007 Calíope achieved 14 years of activities. The group has been considered by specialized critics as “one of our best vocal groups” (O Globo, December 22, 1997 – Luiz Paulo Horta) and “one of the best in activity in Brazil” (Jornal do Brasil, July 30, 1998 – Clóvis Marques).
Since its creation in 1993, Calíope has been intensely active in the Brazilian musical scene, performing in several concerts in Brazil and abroad. In 2002 Calíope performed in Santiago, Chile, in a concert promoted by the Brazilian Embassy and by Brazil’s Ministry of External Relations, the Itamaraty. In 2005
it was part of the Official Programme of the Brazil Year in France, performing in
a tour through six French cities. With support from Itamaraty, Calíope also made
a concert in the Brazilian Embassy in Berlin, Germany.
In 1999 Calíope released its first CD – of 18th century Brazilian and Portuguese music – which was enthusiastically received by specialized critics. The O Globo newspaper considered it one of the 5 best classical music CDs released in 1999.
Calíope’s second CD, Sábado Santo, released in December 2001, was sponsored by Petrobras and the Museu da Música da Arquidiocese de Mariana, and achieved the same critical response: “The climax is the CD delivered by Calíope, from Rio de Janeiro, directed by Julio Moretzsohn (...) showing the evolution of a group about to turn 10 years old which is being recognized in our musical scene. An impressive interpretation with consistency and musicality, by a surprising number of good voices (O Globo, March 5, 2002 – Luiz Paulo Horta). Within this same project, two other CDs were recorded: Quinta-Feira Santa, in 2002, and Música Fúnebre, in 2003.
In 2005 Calíope released its fifth CD through the Radio MEC label, dedicated to composers Henrique Oswald and Alberto Nepomuceno. This CD also received great reviews: “this splendid Requiem coming virtually from the shadows to our admiration finds an equally splendid version in Calíope’s voices – this vocal group is over 10 years old and today is an important feature of our musical life.
It has 20 singers directed by Moretzsohn, with high vocal and stylistic quality” (Luiz Paulo Horta – O Globo, 12/19/2005). “…this record (Radio MEC label) is
an important release, with Oswald’s Requiem and Motets, and Nepomuceno’s Missa Virgem Maria da Imaculada Conceição. Its listening is more than recommended” (João Luiz Sampaio – O Estado de São Paulo, 01/19/2006). “…impeccable tuning, well trained voices, homogeneous timbres and good interpretative taste” (Ronaldo Miranda – Diapason Magazine, 03/2006).
In 2006 and 2007 the group first presented at Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil
in Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro the original opera The Fisherman and His Soul, based on Oscar Wilde’s short story, with libretto by Guilherme Miranda and music by Marcos Lucas.
Throughout its career, Calíope has presented programs fully dedicated to important composers such as Claudio Monteverdi, Henry Purcell, Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann, Gioachino Rossini, Anton Bruckner and Benjamin Britten as well as thematic programs, with pieces related to Brazilian Colonial Music, Latin-American Colonial Music, Iberian Villancicos, Baroque Operas, North-American Music, Negro Spirituals, Brazilian Choir Music – from Colonial to Contemporary –, Belle Epoque: Rio-Paris 1900, Romantic Music and Contemporary Music. Calíope also took part in two other operas: Claudio Monteverdi’s Orfeo, performed at and produced by Sala Cecília Meireles (Rio de Janeiro), and John Blow’s Venus and Adonis, performed at and produced by Centro Cultural do Banco do Brasil (Rio de Janeiro).
Calíope also functions as the base for Coro Sinfônico do Rio de Janeiro,
which, supervised by Julio Moretzsohn, performs with the Orquestra Petrobras Sinfônica and the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira under diverse Brazilian and foreign conductors.
