Rio de Janeiro’s Symphonic choir
The Coro Sinfônico do Rio de Janeiro was formed in early 2003 to perform with the Orquestra Petrobras Sinfônica and the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira. It is composed by 100 lyrical singers, with Calíope as its core, and is directed by Conductor Julio Moretzsohn. The choir has been performing regularly with
these orchestras and has received excellent reviews.
“We could feel the powerful presence of Coro Sinfônico do Rio de Janeiro,
where Julio Moretzsohn develops the beautiful work begun with Calíope”
(O Globo, March 2005 – Luiz Paulo Horta).
“This Thursday in a concert by the Petrobras Sinfônica, we were given a
splendid version of [Shostakovich’s] Symphony No. 13, “Babi Yar” … a choir that Julio Moretzsohn turned into a magnificent instrument” (O Globo, July 2006 –
Luiz Paulo Horta).
Under renowned Brazilian and foreign conductors, such as Isaac Karabtchevsky, Roberto Minczuk, Roberto Tibiriçá, Yeruam Scharovsky, Hubert Soudant (Holland), Jerzy Semkov (USA), Rodolfo Fischer (Chile), Luís Gustavo Petri and Roberto Duarte, the Coro Sinfônico do Rio de Janeiro has presented important symphonic repertoires. Among the most significant pieces are Mahler’s Symphonies no. 2 and 8 (Symphony of a Thousand); Mozart’s Requiem, Coronation Mass and Great Mass in C Minor; Shostakovich’s Symphony no. 13 (Babi Yar); Bruckner’s Te Deum; Beethoven’s Symphony no. 9, Choral Fantasy and Missa Solemnis; Villa-Lobos’ Forest of the Amazon, Choros 10 and Brazilian Suite no. 4; Haendel’s Messias; and John Adams’ On the Transmigration
of Souls.
